BEACHNUT SURF SHOP has been an idea knocking around in our heads for the past several years. We’ve fostered the vision of converting a neglected building into a vibrant locale for those with a youthful zest for enjoying water and life. Deep in the throes of winter 2010, we spotted the ideal building in our favorite surf town, “Wouldn’t that make a great surf shop!?!” Multiple coats of paint, and lots of elbow grease later, the ugly duckling building was transformed into the fun, quirky, place that is now BEACHNUT SURF SHOP. Stop in to check out our surprising variety of surfboards, skateboards, jewelry, great used books and vintagey stuff.
Larry Bordine never passes up an opportunity to proselytize the advantages of paddlesurfing and why a Stand Up Paddle board is the ultimate Great Lakes watercraft. He has recruited/converted so many people to paddlesurfing that he’s been nicknamed ‘The Paddlesurf Evangelist’. He’s also acquired a full range of wet suits/dry suits in every size and thickness so that he can take friends paddlesurfing in any season of the year.
“Never planning on getting into the surfboard business, I caught the SUP wave, and this is where it is taking me. People see me stand up paddle surfing in places they had never seen a surfer and ask me what the heck I was on. I have had so many people want to try the sport that I needed a second board. Because Stand Up Paddle boards are very difficult and expensive to come by in northern Michigan, I decided to build my own board. I applied my background in marine engineering with my skills from building kayaks and canoes, and developed a “Home Brew” board building process. Soon we had a whole fleet of friends wanting to catch the SUP wave on their own SUB, thus the birth of Beach Nut Surf Boards and our method of building your own Stand Up Paddleboard.” |
